After day one of blearily making my way around Krakow after an all night journey I was bright eyed and bush tailed when I woke up on Monday April 9th and ready to do some exploring.
First things first...I had a pastry and coffee at the bakery across from my Airbnb and then I was off. It was about a ten minute walk to the Old Town from where I was staying. From the main square I wandered off on a side street...
The Church of St Peter and Paul with its twelve statues in front. I couldn't get over how many nuns I saw in traditional dress. Was there some kind of convention going on? (kidding....that's just the way they roll here)
Herding that lot would be my idea of a nightmare.
Even though I am no fan of horses I always feel sorry for these ones that pull carriages for tourists. Although I plead guilty to going on one in New Orleans a few years back.
This is the Castle Wawel but that is the closet I got to it today...will be going closer in a couple of days. I wandered back along Tyniecka Street where Pope John Paul II lived as a student. Sorry, didn't find the actual house which is at #10. I had no interest to be honest...
However...the street did have some very cool doors and decorations on the buildings....
THIS was on the side of a building - amazing!!!
It was a day of wandering and I enjoyed walking along the perimeter of the Old Town - on what was once the moat....
Here are some of the remains of the City Walls
Trams rolled all over the city
I loved walking along this path and lots of places to sit.
Above is the Barbican which was a fortified outpost along the City walls.
Back into the Old City and time to go to church...(cough!)
This is Church of our Lady Assumed into Heaven or better known as St Mary's Basilica. I wrestled with going into here - as I hinted earlier I am no fan of the RC church and am not religious at all. But it is a top tourist attraction in Krakow and there is always that FOMO - Fear of Missing Out.
Here are my pictures:
I find all this over the top and prefer simpler churches. But as my grandma always used to say "Everyone to their own fancy said the old woman as she kissed her cow". It would sure be a boring world if we were all alike wouldn't it?
It was time for a break and no I didn't have a doughnut - well not today anyway....!!! But don't they look good?
I needed a sit down (the doughnut place was packed) and a space to write in my journal. Here is a tiger latte - if my memory serves me right it was part tea and part coffee with loads of milk. But I could be wrong...all I know is it was good!!! The cafe was on the Main Square but in a quieter corner.
Truth be told I was starting to get tired - the old gal just ain't what she used to be.
But of course I couldn't go back to the room without having a bite to eat and I found a pierogi place on the street I walked along to get to my temporary little home. Okay where's the sour cream? These were onions on top...despite looking like bacon bits. They were good though....but not as good as the ones I have back home...
It was a good day of just wandering around taking photographs and doing my thing.
And that was the end of day two!!!
