Poking around Positano

So here's another snazzy title - what can I say I am on a roll!!  The way I walk these days pretty much describes it.

My Lonely Planet mini-guide gushed that Positano was the "pin-up" of the Amalfi coast so of course I had to go and check it out.

After being dropped off by the shuttle I managed to find my way to the Sorrento bus station (there were a few hiccups but I did find it eventually) where I purchased a 24-hour ticket for 10 euros. The line for the SITA public bus was very long and the bus was full before I could get to the front - there were still about five people ahead of me.  However, that had a silver lining as I was able to get a choice seat on the next bus which pulled up a few minutes later and loaded right away  - a window seat where I had a good view of the sea.

I had heard the trip along the Amalfi coast was a wild one and that is no lie!  I can't even imagine how it would be in the summer with much heavier traffic.  It was a beauty though.

There are two places the bus stops in Positano - at the top and at the bottom.  I was told or read (can't remember!) that getting off at the top was the best as not only did you get the views but you walked down and not up.  I'd definitely recommend that.

So off I went... I had a full water bottle with me and I didn't stop.  I just kept walking.  I was tempted by a couple of outdoor cafes but I kept on going just enjoying the beautiful views.  I had a good helping (or two) at the buffet breakfast that morning and I had a plan for the evening meal.

This was my first view of Positano when I got off the bus.  So here we go..down, down, down.

Here are those gorgeous blue clothes again and I still resisted.

No, we aren't anywhere near the bottom  - just the magic of a zoom lens!

As I always say, I do love a beautiful door!

You can see the road I will be walking.

Sometimes there were sidewalks, sometimes I had to walk along the road.  No worries, there were a few of us.  The road was too narrow for big buses or trucks to navigate - just crazy Italian drivers in their cars or on their motorbikes.

I loved this bench depicting Positano.  Now I was in the main part of town.

I then wandered down a walkway to the beach.  I was far from the only one - I hit the crowds.  This was mid-October.  Between the crowds and the heat I think summer in southern Italy would be hellish.

The towers of Positano.

As you can see the beach at Positano would never win any awards.  The attraction is the beauty of its setting.

I made my way back up to the main road looking back down at the beach.

This was a different sculpture.

I did love this though.

I really liked the ceramics in the area but I just didn't have room in my luggage to haul it back home.  As I mentioned in my last post I did pick up some ceramic salad tongs in Sorrento as they were easier to transport.

I then wandered further along the road to the bus stop.  The original plan was to carry on to Amalfi but I spent longer in Positano than I had planned and the size of the crowd waiting for the bus was horrifying.  So I crossed the road and one person and myself got on the bus back to Sorrento.

As I  had pasta the previous day it was my day for pizza.  I had read that Pizzeria de Franco (near the bus and train station) was really good so that was the plan for supoer.  I was famished so I headed there as soon as the bus pulled into the station.

This is known as Sorrento-style pizza.

It did not disappoint!!!

As I had the 24-hour pass I got back on the SITA bus which dropped me in front of my hotel.

I thoroughly enjoyed Positano despite it being filled with tourists.  The walk down from the bus stop was lovely with beautiful views of the area and I would definitely recommend doing that if you take the bus.  It was nice to be let off at a quieter place before getting to the chaotic centre and of course walking down is much more pleasant than walking up.

Peeing on fish or a fish out of water

Well this morning we headed off by boat to Siem Reap.  Due to the low water on the Tonie Sap Lake (more like a river until near the end of the trip when it widened considerably) the trip would be an 8 hour one... It was supposed to be boring but ended up as anything but...in no certain order...let's see.... We had a rest stop (turned out to be the only one) along the way and the loo was just a hole over the lake and there were fish circling around underneath.  Yes it was just a hole in the floor...you definitely had someone watch your stuff while you went in or one false move and your camera/purse or whatever would be in the lake.  The fish either like the warm pee coming in or they are pervs and like to see ladies parts.  We were just a few minutes out when all of a sudden there was something flying over me and jumping all over the floor - a little fish!  Guess he wanted to join the tour.  Roger reached down and scooped him up while I hooted and hollered.  Okay it wasn&#

A walk along the coffin trail (and a couple of lakes) in the Lake District

While in the Lake District I wanted to do some light walking but not heavy duty hiking where I could easily get lost and my body not found for days partially eaten by hungry...sheep?  Anyway, you get the drift...not too grueling and safe for a solo walker.  I get a bit nervous when I am too far from civilization. There are lots of books about walking in the Lake District but they seem to be all about walking the fells in remote places...neither Thelma nor I fancied that.  While browsing in the post office/shop in Ambleside one day (if you are ever in Ambleside you must go there - a treasure!) I found a stand of walk descriptions on post cards.  And there I found my walk.  After all who could resist a stroll on the "coffin trail" in William Wordsworth country... I took a look and thought hmm...cafe along the route...that works for me. (with at least the security of knowing there was an available "loo" along the way.)  Okay, I may not have totally followed the

The highlights of my Fall 2023 trip

I'm back home after a great six weeks away. This was a "short" trip for me.  So here we go with an overview of my trip.   London London for me is always a good idea.  I fell in love with it back in the mid 70's and it's been calling me back ever since. Some of the best things in my life have happened in London.  When I learned my two Oz friends Loraine and Linda were going to be in London in the fall I knew I had to be there.  And what fun we had!!  Of course, I did loads of other things as well.  I spent two weeks there from mid September until very early October and then back again for four nights at the end of October before flying home.   After over five years (delayed for two and a half years thanks to Covid) of walking, I finally finished the 126 km Capital Ring.  The picture above is taken at the end of my walk and where I started in May of 2018 at the main door of Streatham Common station just steps from my B and B.  What a walk!  I got to see so much more
