A mini-break!

I hit the road this past weekend for a short one night getaway.  I missed the Michael Jackson Salute with the Regina Symphony last year and when I saw the Saskatoon Symphony was going to do the same thing this April I bought my ticket immediately!  It turned out to be a wonderful weekend.

I stayed at the White Pelican Bed and Breakfast - here is the
I stayed in the Gold room and very nice it was too.  Breakfast was a spanish omelette which was delicious.

Got lots of walking in as the weather was sunny and warm.  Walked along the banks of the South Saskatchewan River as far as the Circle Drive bridge one way and down through the newly developed Riverside Landing to the Farmers Market at the other end.  I was one exhausted puppy on Sunday night!  I didn't do it all at once though...

Had a new experience...walked on a pedestrian railway bridge with a fence between the pedestrians and the train tracks.  Been there, done that on that particular bridge several times but a train came along.  At first I thought how cool but then as it approached I felt my blood run cold.  I do not like being really close to moving trains or semi-trailer trucks...and I'd never been that close before...and then the bridge was rumbling..  It turned out to be okay (:breath Laurie just breath"!) and was actually hoping for a repeat performance when I walked the same bridge again the next day.

The concert was fabulous with the group Jeans and Classics backed by the Saskatoon Symphony.  All of Michael Jackson's hits with the highlight being "Thriller".  The lead singer did not dress like Michael or try to 'be' Michael but he did an excellent job. I sat beside a woman and her young son and she told me she had seen the Classic Mystery Tour and it is fabulous - I am going to see that one May 12th!  All in all a wonderful evening.

Of course I have to talk about the food....after I checked in I walked over to ta coffee shop called City Perks.  I had a curried tuna sandwich with a strawberry & greens salad on the side; it took FOREVER to get it but worth the wait...almost. .... For dinner that evening I treated myself and went to the 2nd Ave. Grill.  I ordered pecan crusted chicken breast with brie inside - with mashed asiago potatoes and grilled vegetables on the side.  I must not forget the starter salad...a green salad with Saskatoon berry dressing...oh my my my...I had to restrain myself from licking the bowl. :)  A very nice meal.

At the farmers market on Sunday (where I bought some photo note cards as well as some home made ginger/berry jam) I had a piece of Saskatoon berry pie with cream on.  Oh my my my...that was lunch!  The omelette had been good but it wasn't huge and after walking for two and a half hours I was hungry.

All in all a great break!!!

Settling in but not down!

My new place is really starting to feel like home...or a good resting place in between adventures! It may not win any decorating awards but I don't give a rats' - it is my home and full of books, music, photographs and always welcome to friends. Today my friends Shirley and Brent came over and Brent hooked up my DVD player and I can watch movies on the TV rather than the computer. And listen to music the way it's supposed to be...not on little computer speakers or a ghetto blaster. And my record player - yes record player - is hooked up so I can really rock to the oldies. I guess I will be testing the sound proofing in here!

Five weeks from today I will be in Ottawa....the next trip is all booked. I will be visiting Ottawa, Vermont (Burlington and Montpelier), Montreal and Quebec City. Gone just less than three weeks. Our annual walking conference is being held the May long weekend - it should be beautiful in Ottawa as the tulip festival is on.

I am registered to do a half marathon on May 27th...I know I know...I never learn.

Anyway...I have been getting into my training...did another 10km walk today but it was an ugly one. The last two have been good but this one really sucked. My knees were not happy campers at all and let me know it - I don't know why as they should have been in happy land with the Aleve/Ibuprofin cocktail I gave them. Oh well. At least I am getting out there. Talked with a gal who is running the half marathon here in Regina on April 29th (I don't sign up for half marathons if they don't give out medals....I want the hardware...) and was going to do her first run since November today. Yikes. I didn't feel as bad when I heard that!

So now my life revolves around walking - everything else has to fit in around it. Well except work of course....I am back to two days a week...most of the time....gotta love it.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a combo of snow/rain - lovely. But I shall stay here in my cozy little nest as no walking until Monday. Hopefully by this time tomorrow I will have no boxes sitting around waiting to be emptied....yippee!!!

Now I think it's time to watch a movie...

A new home

Yes I am moved and slowly getting settled in. I have downsized into a one bedroom apartment from a two bedroom...well I say downsized and I did get rid of a few things like a wall unit, deep freeze, microwave some clothes and really I did take quite a bit to Value Village. Really I did. But the movers did tell me I have too much 'stuff'. Hmmmff!!! (how do you spell that?) I call it a life well lived. Rubbermaid containers of photo albums and my Beatles collection take up most of my storage room. Luckily I have a huge balcony as there are still a few things out there awaiting a permanent home.

This weekend I rented a car and accompanied by my best friend and her daughter I did buy some new "stuff" for my place which was fun. A new computer chair arrives tomorrow to replace the one bought in 1989, a new vacuum cleaner (the amount I clean it should last a l-o-n-g time!) - even a new blue garbage can for the bathroom. My my I was really getting quite domestic. Once I get my stereo system/DVD player set up life will be perfect. Easter weekend will be spent quietly - either walking in the park getting in some much neglected half marathon training or at home sorting through things and trying to find permanent homes for my 'stuff'.

My computer is now in the living room so guess that means I have to keep the desk a bit tidier - oh oh....I am finding it a bit small but I will get used to it and I don't intend to be home much for the next few years.

I have a killer view of the sunset as I am 7 floors up facing west. I need to buy an air conditioner (there is a hole in the wall for it but it's not provided....weird but true) and a really comfy chair to sit on the balcony, drink tea and read scads of books....that will be a project for later this month and then I think I am done doing the domestic goddess thing and it is back to hitting the road.

Adventures are afoot....

Traveling by Goat to the Western Lake District of England

That title got your attention, didn't it?  Okay, I didn't actually travel on the back of a goat...I mean the poor goat would be dea...
